I have reviewed HUNDREDS of websites for insomnia, and NONE of them cover the REAL CAUSE of Insomnia.  With that said, I am pretty sure that this blog is the ONLY blog that addresses the REAL CAUSE, and it will make total sense.
Do you feel like you can never get refreshing sleep, or can only sleep a few hours a night?
Does this happen night after night until you finally crash and burn? If this sounds like you, read on!
Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep and/or get enough sleep, which can eventually cause many physical and emotional problems.
85% of the population deals with bouts of insomnia during their lifetime.
When you don’t get enough sleep, or don’t get refreshing sleep, it can have serious health consequences.
The most common causes of insomnia are stress, anxiety, depression, stimulants, medication, allergies, sleep apnea and chronic pain.
But the one thing that doctors never mention, or people never talk about, is ADRENAL FATIGUE and abnormal cortisol levels.
This is REALLY the main cause of severe insomnia and more than likely accounts for over half of the reason for Insomnia!
About the Adrenals and Cortisol
Adrenal fatigue or dysfunction can have a profound effect on your ability to sleep yet nobody talks about it!
Meanwhile, doctors are handing out dangerous sleep medications, anxiety medications, muscle relaxers, and anti-depressants like candy! But instead of helping you sleep, they cause terrible side effects and don’t address the real problem.
You cannot correct insomnia until you correct your cortisol levels and heal your adrenals! I can also tell you that over half of us have some level of adrenal fatigue or dysfunction.
So how does this relate to insomnia? Well, I will tell you, and it will make more sense than just the common reasons for insomnia.
The adrenal gland is located on the top of your kidney’s. It is a gland that is one of the most important endocrine glands that produce hormones.
The pituitary gland in the brain sends out hormones that regulate the glands such as the adrenals, thyroid, and reproductive glands. The pituitary is regulated by the hypothalamus (located in the brain).
One of the most important functions of the hypothalamus is to link the nervous system to the endocrine system via the pituitary gland.
Physical or emotional stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, or HPA axis, leading to increased release of cortisol and other hormones.
The Hypothalamus is the mechanism that stimulates the adrenal gland to handle extra stress. In a person with weakened adrenals, the Hypothalamic Pituitary axis overstimulates the adrenal glands to try and keep up thus causing a person to crash.
The hormones then become out of balance, and symptoms start appearing. If these hormones are out of balance, specifically cortisol, you develop SEVERE SLEEP PROBLEMS!
The overactive HPA is like a constant motor running in your brain that won’t shut down. You have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, and never get refreshing sleep.
So, in a nutshell…adrenal fatigue causes abnormal cortisol levels, which causes HPA over stimulation, which causes the insomnia.  If the adrenal fatigue is severe, it can cause serious health problems such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.
You MUST to correct the cortisol levels and nourish the adrenals to recover from adrenal fatigue, so you can correct insomnia.
How to correct cortisol levels
How can we correct the cortisol levels, correct the adrenal fatigue, and get better sleep?
Well, after years of research there are finally some natural supplements that will help correct the cortisol issues, temper the HPA in the brain thus correcting the insomnia.
These natural supplements have been proven to help folks correct insomnia caused by abnormal cortisol levels (caused by adrenal fatigue), yet many people do not know about them, and medical doctors certainly poo poo them.
I found these supplements through my homeopathic doctor who treated me for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome back in 2001.
How do I know if my cortisol levels are abnormal? Well, if you have elevated cortisol levels at night (anywhere from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am),  you will feel like a constant motor is running in your brain that won’t shut off.
The best analogy is that you are sleepy during the day and “come alive” at night! Then you can’t get to sleep until morning, and by then you have to get up and go to work with very little or no sleep! I invented a word for this, called “cycling”.
Then there are some folks that have elevated cortisol levels in the morning (between 6:00 am to 8:00 am). These folks are a little more awake in the morning, but wired and anxious, only to crash in the afternoon and evening, and still cannot get refreshing sleep.
Now you may want to out rule the common reasons as stated above for insomnia, but chances are it is due to abnormal cortisol levels caused from Adrenal Fatigue.
The first thing you will need to do is get your cortisol levels checked so you can take the supplements at the right time.
Let me be clear about something…regular BLOOD TESTS will NOT show abnormal cortisol levels! REPEAT…regular blood tests will not show abnormal cortisol levels!
The only way to truly test your cortisol levels is SALIVA TESTING.
TRY and ask your doctor for a saliva test, but they will probably shake their head, and tell you there is no such thing,  yet people are still suffering, and that is the main reason the main cause of insomnia is overlooked.
MOST doctors do not believe in adrenal fatigue or are they educated about abnormal cortisol levels, and people are still walking around like zombies and getting NO HELP.
If you can get a doctor to give you a saliva test to test your adrenals, great. If not, you can buy a cortisol test kit online.
Make sure you get the test that tests Cortisol 4 or 5 times (night and day) and not just an AM test.   Here are a few companies I recommend:

PLEASE NOTE:  These are cortisol only test kits.  If you have suspect adrenal fatigue, it would be very advantageous to check your DHEA levels (men and women), as low DHEA is a also a hallmark with adrenal fatigue.   Also, if you are menopausal, it is imperative you check the DHEA levels.  Low DHEA can cause a whole host of problems.    So, you will want to get the kits that test both cortisol and DHEA.  I will explain the correlation between low levels of DHEA in adrenal fatigue in another post.  It is imperative that you address low DHEA levels.  It is as important as correcting cortisol levels for better sleep.
If you suspect Adrenal Fatigue, I recommend this kit to test cortisol, DHEA and hormone levels.  Click picture below to order.
Follow the instructions on the kit.  You will take the test and mail it back to the company.  A paid return envelope will be provided.  They will email you the results within a week or so.
NOW, HERE IS THE BEST SUPPLEMENT TO CORRECT INSOMNIA!
The supplement I recommend for tempering the HPA over stimulation is Seriphos by InterPlexus.
It helps by calming down that constant “motor in the brain” strung out feeling, regulates Cortisol, helps with anxiety, and levels out your moods.
Seriphos is a safe, natural product that contains Phosphorylated serine that helps control and modulate the stress response and regulate cortisol levels.  It helps quiet anxiety, the “wired” feeling, and treats the insomnia.
It really is the only way (in my opinion and that of expert homeopathic doctors), to regulate cortisol and treat the insomnia.

The general rule for taking Seriphos, is to take it 4 hours before your cortisol is elevated according to your saliva tests results.
If you know you have high cortisol at night (up all night wired) then take 2 capsules around 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm.
For high morning cortisol, take 4 hours before your cortisol is high according to your saliva test results.  You can adjust the times to take it.
I highly recommend the saliva test so you know how to dose the supplement.  Click on the picture above to order.
It should take you about 2-3 months to completely regulate your sleep cycle with Seriphos, but you should see improvement after one month.
Do not use for more than 3 months at a time.
Also, if you find it makes you a bit more fatigued, don’t panic, your body is just adjusting to it.  You have to plow through because it should start correcting after a month.
Try and hang in there with this protocol, as it will help you!
PLEASE NOTE:  you can drop down to 1 capsule if you are too sensitive.  If you experience insomnia again down the road, start the Seriphos protocol again for 3 months.
If you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia, Seriphos is highly recommended for this condition!
For those with mild insomnia, and if you don’t have the “wired” motor running feeling at night, I recommend 5 – HTP.  Low Serotonin can cause sleep issues.  Here are the brands I recommend:
Click on the pictures above to order 5 – HTP.
WARNING:  If you are on an SSRI, SSNRIs, MAOIs, Triptans, Tricyclic Antidepressants, St. John’s Wort, Lithium, Tramadol, Fentanyl, or Codeine, DO NOT take 5-HTP.  To correct insomnia caused by Adrenal Fatigue, CFS, or Fibromyalgia, it’s best to get off these drugs and take natural supplements like 5-HTP and Enerphos to correct these issues. More on this on upcoming posts.
